7 Places to Visit on St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island, part of the Golden Isles, is home to countless attractions that appeal to a wide range of interests.

1. Learn about Coastal Georgia's history at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. Located in the Keeper’s Dwelling, this space is filled with rare artifacts, interactive displays, and more.

2. James Oglethorpe established what is now the Fort Frederica National Monument in 1736. Today, visitors can take part in guided walking tours to learn about the fort’s history.

3. The World War II Home Front Museum showcases Coastal Georgia’s contribution to WWII. Visitors can try hands-on experiences, like plane spotting and directing fighter pilot squadrons.

4. One of the more unique attractions on St. Simons Island is the Tree Spirits. Look closely at the oak trees that cover the island, and you may just spot a weathered face staring back at you.

5. Found in Pier Village, St. Simons Island Pier is one of the best places to cast your line or watch the sunset. The pier offers tray tables and water hoses to clean your catch, while the benches along each side are ideal for dolphin watching.

6. Spend time surrounded by nature at Cannon’s Point Preserve. The 644-acre site features a mature maritime forest and abundant wild native species. There are also shell middens dating back to 2500 BCE, as well as the remains of slave quarters and a large plantation home from the 1800s.

7. There’s no shortage of fun at Neptune Park Fun Zone. Play through the 18-hole mini-golf course or cool off in the wading pool. There’s also a state-of-the-art playground.
